Getting Outdoors East Lothian
It is important for us to spend time in nature
With so many amazing outdoor spaces in East Lothian we want to make getting outside and walking as accessible and as safe as possible for everyone. We'll be continuing to add government advice and local outdoor areas to this page so you can see where to go walking near you.
If you have a favourite place you would like to see on this page let us know!
Public Toilets UpdateUpdated 10 July 2020
East Lothian Council will begin opening a limited number of public toilets this coming weekend. Please acknowledge priority use for people with disabilities.
The first toilets to open on Saturday 11 July are the disabled access facilities which will be used temporarily to cater for all users between 10am – 4pm at:
- Aberlady Bay Nature Reserve
- Yellowcraig Beach
- Bayswell Road, Dunbar
- John Muir Country Park
- Shore Road, Dunbar
- Skateraw Beach, Dunbar
- Gullane Bents Beach
- Longniddry Bents car parks 2 and 3
- Fisherrow Harbour, Musselburgh
- Quality Street, North Berwick
- Links Road, Port Seton
- Ayres Wynd, Prestonpans
- Whitesands Beach, Dunbar
- Neilson Park Road, Haddington
- Shorthope Street, Musselburgh
A number of changes have been introduced by the Council to help keep people safe. These include a limit on the number of people in a toilet building at one time with the opening of the disabled access facilities only which provides a ‘one in, one out’ system. To allow more frequent cleaning of facilities, reduced opening hours of 10am-4pm will operate.
Scottish Government Guidelines for Exercise and ActivityUpdated: 29 July 2020
Shielding is being paused from 1st August. This will mean that you can follow the same guidance as the rest of Scotland.
Please read here for further guidence: https://www.gov.scot/publications/covid-shielding/pages/changes-to-shielding-advice/
Scotland is now in Phase 3:
Mandatory face coverings in shops and other retail
Outdoors – a household can meet up to 4 other households at a time – up to 15 people in total
Indoors – a household can meet up to 2 other households at a time – up to 8 people in total. This includes overnight stays
A household can meet up to 4 other households per day in total (this is in total – meetings indoors and/or outdoors)
The limit on the number of other households you can meet per day (indoors or outdoors) doesn't apply to young people who are younger than 18.
Children aged 11 or under no longer need to physically distance indoors. Young people aged 12-17 must continue to physically distance
Extended Households: Non cohabiting partners (and any children under 18 in their households) can form an extended household without physical distancing
Several other restrictions have now also been lifted. Please read here for further guidance: https://www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-framework-decision-making-scotlands-route-map-through-out-crisis-phase-3-update/pages/8/
Use your judgement and only take part in an activity if you can do so safely, maintain physical distancing and not put yourself or others at risk. When taking part in activity outside, avoid touching surfaces with your hands, sharing equipment and touching your mouth and face. Follow advice on the NHS Inform website about hygiene and wash your hands as soon as you get home.
